The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has called on Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to address alleged illegal practices by quick commerce platforms like Blinkit, Instamart, Zepto, and Swiggy.

What’s the Issue?

According to CAIT, these platforms misuse foreign investments to disrupt the retail market, creating unfair competition for small shopkeepers. This threatens the livelihood of over 30 million grocery store owners across India.

Key Concerns Raised by CAIT:

Unfair Practices: These companies are accused of controlling inventory, dominating suppliers, and offering steep discounts to eliminate small local shops.

Violation of Laws: CAIT alleges that these platforms are breaking rules related to Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and the Competition Act.

Misuse of Funds: Instead of investing in infrastructure, the platforms reportedly use FDI funds to cover losses, set up unauthorized "dark stores," and engage in unfair trade practices.

CAIT’s Plan of Action

To address these concerns, CAIT has:

Written to Piyush Goyal urging strict enforcement of e-commerce rules to ensure fair competition.

Planned a two-day seminar in Delhi on January 6-7 to discuss the challenges posed by quick commerce.

Scheduled a meeting with the minister to seek immediate intervention.

A Call for Fairness

This move aligns with Piyush Goyal's recent statement encouraging quick commerce platforms to collaborate with local kirana stores for a more inclusive and balanced retail ecosystem.

CAIT hopes for stronger government action to protect small shopkeepers and create a level playing field in India’s retail market.

Quick commerce platforms like Blinkit, Zepto, and Instamart promise ultra-fast deliveries—sometimes in as little as 10 minutes. While this speed is convenient for urban consumers in India, it comes with serious flaws, especially when it involves high-value items like electronics.

My Troubling Experience with Blinkit
On November 29, 2024, I ordered boAt Nirvana Ion TWS Earbuds from Blinkit. When the package arrived, it was obvious something was wrong:

The box looked tampered with.

The left earbud didn’t work.

Two extra earmuffs were missing.

I immediately asked for a replacement. However, the replacement was even worse—a charging case without earbuds! Despite providing photos and videos showing the issue, Blinkit denied my claim, insisting the delivery was "intact."

Adding to my frustration, the delivery person behaved suspiciously. He commented on the package contents and left quickly, not allowing me to inspect it.

Recurring Complaints: Not Just My Story
My experience isn’t unique. Many customers have reported similar problems:

Empty boxes or tampered packages.

Wrong or mismatched items delivered.

For instance, one customer received a 0.5-gram gold coin instead of a 1-gram coin. Another got women’s clothing instead of men’s underwear.

These incidents suggest systemic issues in quick commerce, where speed is prioritized over quality and accountability.

Why Quick Commerce Fails on High-Value Items
Here’s why quick commerce struggles with high-value products:

Pressure on Delivery Workers: Tight delivery deadlines leave no time for proper checks, increasing the risk of theft or tampering.
Lack of Oversight: Many platforms use third-party delivery personnel, making it harder to maintain accountability.
Poor Packaging: Items like my earbuds come poorly sealed, making tampering easy.
Customer Care: A Weak Link
Blinkit’s customer service was another disappointment. My complaints were dismissed, and I neither got a refund nor a proper replacement. This lack of accountability only adds to the frustration.

For any consumer-focused business, effective customer support is critical. Ignoring legitimate grievances can seriously harm a company’s reputation.

What Needs to Change
To regain trust, quick commerce platforms need to focus on:

Better Delivery Practices: Stricter background checks for delivery personnel and real-time tracking can improve accountability.
Secure Packaging: High-value items need tamper-proof seals to protect them during transit.
Improved Customer Care: Platforms should resolve complaints fairly and promptly, making returns and refunds hassle-free.

A Word of Caution for Customers
Until platforms like Blinkit address these flaws, think twice before ordering high-value items through quick commerce. While the speed is tempting, the risks may outweigh the benefits.

The Bigger Picture
Quick commerce has transformed retail, but its future success depends on building trust and reliability. Regulatory bodies should step in to create clear rules for handling high-value deliveries.

In the end, speed is important, but trust will determine which platforms thrive.

Quick commerce is transforming how Indians shop, offering lightning-fast delivery for daily needs. This trend, fueled by startups and tech giants alike, is reshaping the retail ecosystem in India.

The Birth of Quick Commerce in India
The idea of quick commerce was born out of necessity during the COVID-19 lockdown. Aadit Palicha and Kaivalya Vohra, two 18-year-olds from Mumbai, began delivering groceries and medicines to neighbors using bicycles. This humble beginning grew into Zepto, now valued at ₹30,000 crores and making them India’s youngest billionaires.

Quick commerce differs from regular e-commerce by promising deliveries within minutes instead of days. Companies use data analysis and predictive algorithms to stock items in “dark stores” near high-demand areas, ensuring speedy fulfillment.

Changing Consumer Behavior
From ice cream to fresh vegetables, Indian consumers have embraced the convenience of quick deliveries. For instance, 10% of ice cream orders now come through quick commerce platforms like BlinkIt and Zepto.

The model mirrors earlier successes in food delivery by platforms like Zomato and Swiggy. Leveraging their established logistics networks, they transitioned to delivering groceries and essentials, a more lucrative market. Zomato’s quick commerce business, through BlinkIt, is expected to outpace its food delivery segment soon.

The Surge of Quick Commerce Players
Quick commerce has grown by 75% in India in 2023, far outpacing traditional e-commerce, even during a year of subdued consumer spending. Companies like Zepto, BlinkIt, Swiggy’s Instamart, Flipkart’s ‘Minutes,’ and BigBasket are leading the charge. Major players like Amazon and Reliance are also ramping up efforts to capture this market.

New startups, such as Bengaluru-based Origin, are focusing on niches like fresh produce, while established players like Tata’s BigBasket are shifting entirely to the quick delivery model.

Opportunities in Tier 2 and 3 Cities
Interestingly, smaller cities like Nashik are becoming significant markets for quick commerce. Zepto reported reaching 1,000 daily orders in Nashik within six weeks—faster than in metro areas. These underserved markets present growth opportunities for quick commerce players.

Challenges on the Horizon
However, the rapid expansion of quick commerce is not without challenges. Traditional retail players, represented by organizations like the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), argue that quick commerce is disrupting small businesses. Reports suggest neighborhood grocery stores have seen a 30% drop in sales since the pandemic.

Additionally, the profitability of quick commerce is under scrutiny. With some platforms delivering even low-cost items like a single milk packet, the cost-per-delivery model poses challenges. Scaling up while maintaining margins remains a pressing issue.

The Future of Quick Commerce
Despite skepticism, quick commerce is set to redefine retail. Collaboration with FMCG companies and innovative logistics strategies may pave the way for sustainable growth. The festive season has already highlighted its potential, with brands like ITC and Mondelez offering exclusive products through these platforms.

As players expand to new regions and refine their delivery models, quick commerce is poised to become an integral part of India's retail fabric, meeting the rising demand for speed and convenience.
