Zomato-owned Blinkit has stepped into the quick food delivery market with its new service, Bistro. This move places Blinkit alongside major players like Zepto Cafe and Swiggy’s Bolt. Bistro already has a dedicated app available for both Android and Apple devices.

Currently, Bistro is being tested in select areas of Gurugram, where Zomato is headquartered. Users can easily link their Zomato accounts to import contacts and addresses for a seamless experience.

According to Bistro’s app description, the service aims to “redefine convenience with superfast delivery,” providing high-quality experiences while saving time. However, Blinkit hasn’t made an official announcement about the launch yet.

Rising Competition in Quick Food Delivery
The quick food delivery market is heating up. Zepto recently revealed plans for a standalone app for Zepto Cafe, while Swiggy’s Bolt is already active in over 400 cities.

This isn’t Zomato’s first attempt at speedy food delivery. Back in 2022, Zomato launched a similar service called Instant, but it was discontinued in 2023. Reflecting on this, Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal commented, “10-minute food can change the game if we get it right.”

He also noted that Blinkit’s fast delivery speeds have raised customer expectations, putting pressure on Zomato to improve its delivery times.

Why Quick Food Delivery is Growing
Experts believe the focus on quick food delivery is a response to slowing growth in traditional food delivery. Satish Meena, an analyst at Datum Intelligence, explained, “Quick commerce is growing faster, while the growth rate of regular food delivery is slowing. This strategy encourages customers to order more, especially for last-minute needs.”

Swiggy revealed that within just two months of launching Bolt, quick food orders already account for 5% of its total orders.

Meanwhile, Bengaluru-based startup Swish recently raised $2 million in funding and has begun delivering in select areas of the city, further fueling competition in this space.

An industry expert summed it up, saying, “Blinkit is already a leader in quick commerce, so it was only a matter of time before they joined the quick food delivery race.”
